The Breitling Exospace

The Breitling Exospace B55 is an interesting take on a smartwatch, this is a quartz watch with three analog hands and a digital readout. So we could consider the Exospace B55 as a hybrid timepiece, a digital/analogue wristwatch.

Whilst the smartwatch has pretty much been an electronic device with the exception of the Frederique Constant Horological Smartwatch and the TAG Heuer Kirium of the 1990s. The Exospace B55 is a SuperQuartz watch, this is a high frequency, high accuracy thermo-compensated quartz electronic movement.

Breitling made their reputation as a pilot’s watch with the Navitimer and the Chronomat. So it stands to reason that the B55 Exospace is an aeronautical timepiece designed for aviators with a special emphasis on space flight. The Navitimer has a busy dial, but this is a circular slide-rule for pilots. The Exospace has a dial that is easy to read unlike the Navitimer and although this isn’t my style of pilot’s watch, I do appreciate the application.
